Aliquippa (in progress)
[director]
Located 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, the city of Aliquippa was once home to one of the largest steel manufacturers in the United States. It was a microcosm of 20th century America with a turbulent history fraught with institutional racism, riots, and labor disputes. And yet, its citizens were brought together by two things—the mill and football. When the mill closed in the 80s, Aliquippa faced the realities of economic decline, abandoned homes, and a virtually empty main street. Through it all, the high school football team has remained the community’s main source of hope. Inspired by Aliquippa’s magnetic community spirit, I am making a film that documents a slice of life in Aliquippa, hopefully paying tribute not only to its rich history but also to the community, energy, and life that courses through Aliquippa today.
